GO: How did you get started in photography and what compelled you to work within the wedding niche?

A: I started my photography business after leaving the event world as an event coordinator when Covid outbroke and events were on a hiatus. Once I shot my first wedding I was completely hooked! Documenting weddings fills my soul and literally is the favorite part of my business. Since diving into the wedding scene full force, I have also found a sincere love for the industry's community among fellow wedding professionals. What an honor it is to be there throughout the day and witnessing such special moments in my couple’s lives.

GO: How do you make a couple feel at ease to capture those perfect fashion-forward images?

A: This is such a great question! I start with getting to know my couples through questionnaires, Zoom chats, and social media. Then I send my clients a welcome gift including my wedding photography guide. This covers so much, really hitting on every aspect of how to make the day and the photography an easy, fun process. All my packages include an engagement session in the PNW, and these can be added on with any package booked for couples in AZ or anywhere else. I highly recommend this step!!
One, you get gorgeous photos you can use for a wedding website or save the dates; but also, it gives us a chance to work together before the big day! It allows a warm up, and for you to see what it will be like. I prompt my clients and get authentic interactions, and I shoot an editorial style where I help pose the whole thing! You do not need to worry about what to do with your hands. I feel like this balance in posing style creates a very comfortable vibe for my couples.

GO: What are your favorite moments to capture during the wedding day?

A: The couple portraits, the bride getting ready, the couple exiting from the ceremony for the first time being married, the DETAILS, the candid moments of your loved ones, and the dance floor! I love to party!

GO: How far in advance should a couple reach out to you if they wish to book you for their wedding?

A: I always suggest as soon as you can – having to turn couples away is very difficult. 10 months is ideal, but truly whenever! Sometimes stars align with late inquiries and I love that.

GO: Do you travel for destination weddings and if so, what does this entail for a couple?

A: Absolutely! I love traveling and experiencing different sceneries with weddings. I shoot in two home bases, meaning no travel fees for wedding packages in Washington and Arizona. When it comes to other locations, fees will vary depending on the distance and time I am needed. I typically only charge flight and lodging for myself as my travel fee. 

GO: Aside from weddings, are there any other types of photography you enjoy?

A: I love continuing to document my couples lives as they grow. Maternity to newborn to family sessions. Seeing their lives and families evolve is a privilege. I also love to document my own family and our travels when I can.

Setting Sail – A Charm City Engagement Session

Amina and Arsalan’s story began amidst the backdrop of Maryland's largest city of Baltimore when they crossed paths on the modern-day matchmaker, Bumble. Their digital connection was swift, sparked by having the “three Ms” in common: medicine, music, and Michigan/Maryland sports. As Arsalan soon learned, Amina’s interest in sports was embellished a bit but there was the promise of something extraordinary in the making, so he didn’t mind too much.

Arsalan’s world was shaken when his father fell seriously ill, and the weight of caring for him fell upon his shoulders. It was during this trying time that Amina, with her unwavering compassion, became his beacon of hope and his source of strength when he needed it most.

Amina's presence became the guiding light that pulled Arsalan through the darkest of days. Her care, empathy, and the unspoken understanding between them created a bond that could not be broken. With the blessings from his late father and Amina’s parents, Arsalan planned an unforgettable proposal in the very same spot where they first met.

The couple chose Charm City as the backdrop for their multi-part engagement portrait session, featuring the city’s iconic Fells Point and Inner Harbor settings in their photos. Sail Local’s Captain Bobby took the couple on a sunset sailing cruise of Baltimore for the last segment of their portraits, where they were photographed with the warm breeze in their hair and the gentle waves of the harbor splashing on the side of the boat. The setting was absolutely magical and a perfect way to honor both the couple and the city where they fell in love.

“Amina and Arsalan are one of my favorite couples of all time,” shares the couple’s photographer, Anna Schmidt. “They are the sweetest! This sailboat portrait session with them actually inspired me to begin offering these types of portrait sessions regularly as part of my bespoke packages. For me, as a photographer, there is something very freeing about photographing on the water and getting to view portraits from a different vantage point. It's a beautiful experience all around.”

Love in Marche – Inspiration for an Intimate Wedding

The Marche region of Italy is known for its diverse landscapes – olive groves, vineyards, and rolling green hills where the sunset casts a glow upon the land like a warm caress. Inspired by the notion of celebrating love in Marche, a talented group of vendors collaborated to create these beautiful scenes from an intimate wedding.

The stars of this Marche wedding story are Ella and Chris, who met when Ella was a young nurse who had recently started a new assignment, at a new hospital, in a new city. When the pandemic broke out, she quickly found herself catapulted into a vortex of chaos and long shifts; but there was a silver lining when it led to meeting Chris, a young doctor who “faced everything with great determination and optimism.”

The madness surrounding the couple hastened the growth of their relationship, as they no longer chose to waste time on trivial things. Instead, they chose to focus on the love and mutual respect they shared.

Chris proposed during a special evening he planned for Ella, which involved a day at the lake with bike rides and a picnic. There was no pomp and circumstance – just a normal, relaxing day together, away from the noise of the city.

It was a perfect moment, that led to planning an intimate destination wedding in Italy, sheltering themselves from the chaos and embracing the tranquility of being surrounded only by their closest friends and family.

THE STORY OF MY LOVE

Neutral colors provide an understated aesthetic, yet emphasize impressive lines and an artistic perspective. The result is avant-garde through and through, representing the epitome of French savoir-faire.

An old chapel from the 12th century provides a haunting and exquisite contrast to a contemporary bride, who represents the sensuality and femininity of a 21st century woman. That contrast was the inspiration for this fashion love story - a “generational shock,” interpreted for the luxury wedding world.

Embodying the Renaissance spirit, this fully expressed woman allows herself to envision her wedding in her own way. With a shaved head and non-traditional wedding gown, she invites the audience to witness her personal and revolutionary contribution to the wedding industry - all, while surrounded by ancient stones and the light of 450 candles.

AN ENCHANTING ELOPEMENT IN MILAN AND THE ROMANTIC ALLURE OF VILLA ARCONATI

Elopements are one of the most romantic adventures a couple can have. For Emily and David, their wedding experience led them to Italy where they celebrated their nuptials with an enchanting elopement in Milan.

“Instead of eloping in Lake Como or Amalfi Coast,” the couple shares, “we fell in love with the romantic allure of Villa Arconati in Milan." 

With its stunning gardens, frescoes, and fairytale-like design, Villa Arconati is often referred to as “Petit Versailles.” To complement its aesthetic, the couple wanted their wedding ceremony décor to have a pop of color. With the spring season bringing so many options for colorful wedding flowers, the design team chose flowers inspired by the sunny color of the villa.

The final floral arrangements included a seasonal palette of pink, fuchsia, lilac, and white with a blend of pink and apricot baby’s breath, lilac delphiniums, carnations, roses, and sweet peas. These gorgeous wedding flowers made for a perfect elopement ceremony setting, surrounding the couple in a semi-circle beneath the Pompeo Statue. 

Emily and David’s elopement in Milan had the same stylish details as a traditional luxury wedding, with beautiful invitation suite. The power pink invite also featured an emblem of the villa, fuschsia sealing wax, and handwritten calligraphy. 

The wedding team combined an air of regality with contemporary touches for the tablescape, using vibrant floral accents. Along with the mismatched blooms, the rest of the wedding table was dressed with bone china pottery and a place settings that were both regal and vintage.

Finally, a two-tiered wedding cake was displayed with a minimal design that was understated, yet elegant enough to complement the stately surroundings of Villa Arconati. 

As the couple strolled around the grounds of Villa Arconati, The Fashion Wedding photography team captured a collection of exquisite images. Dressed in a light and flowy wedding gown, the bride was the epitome of “bridal chic” – the picture-perfect representation of an elopement in Milan.

Meet Kellie Walsh, the Visionary Behind Captivating Fashion and Wedding Photography

Kellie has been a professional photographer for her entire working life. She picked up a camera during her freshman year in college, while she was majoring in Media Communication. Needless to say, it was love at first sight. 

“I quickly began creating imagery that reflected my inner vision,” she explains, “both as an early documentarian, then later developing my skills in visual narration. I loved the way I could create an image through the combination of the subject and the environment, to create a ‘story.’ That story could be whimsical, romantic, bold… whatever I felt could provoke an emotion.”

Kellie’s knack for visual storytelling eventually led to her career as a fashion and wedding photographer. The storytelling aspect is also what gives her images more depth, allowing viewers to connect more with her work. 

The Creative Eye – Kellie’s Approach to Fashion Photography

When shooting an editorial spread on location, Kellie makes location scouting one of her top priorities.

“In so many ways, a well-executed scout day will save so much wasted time and allow for a smooth transition from one shot to another,” she states. “The location also adds a very important element to the composition of the imagery. This is also true in regards to the wardrobe – the clothes become another element of the design. When scouting, I look how a particular room will enhance the wardrobe choice and the model. How the shape of the room, color, the lighting, all the texture that the environment has, can add to the storytelling.”

Kellie’s approach to fashion photography combines elements of lighting, location, and design to create “layers” to the composition of an image. She refers to this as “storytelling at its best,” as each individual component comes together to enhance her vision as a photographer. 

“We, as the artists, create the mood through the choices we make,” she shares, “both with what we include in the frame of the camera as well as what we do NOT include.  Our point of view is how the viewer will see the imagery and feel the impact of the shot.  I love it. The end results can be quite magical!”

Capturing Love and Joy as a Luxury Wedding Photographer

While some photographers may switch modes when pivoting between editorial and lifestyle photography, Kellie doesn’t adjust her approach when switching from fashion shoots to real weddings. In fact, her editorial style carries over into the weddings she captures, which has helped solidify her as a leading luxury wedding photographer at 4 Eyes Photography – a company she co-founded with her partner, Rupert Rogers.

“I always aim at creating the most authentic, dynamic imagery possible, regardless of the client or end-user,” she says. “Whether it is a model in a high-end couture gown or a groom seeing his wife-to-be for the first look, they are all unique moments in time.”

Still, even the most seasoned wedding photographer will acknowledge the higher stakes of photographing a wedding as opposed to a styled fashion shoot.

“An editorial or fashion shoot can be a little easier than a wedding in some ways since we are creating the environment and we have a higher level of control,” Kellie describes. “With a wedding, you are capturing the moments as they enfold, in real time. You ‘see’ the same way, but now my creative decisions are in a constant state of flow and often have to be made split-second and cannot be re-done! It’s not for the faint of heart.”

Behind the Lens – Kellie’s Creative Process and Inspiration

Kellie’s signature photography aesthetic is both romantic and dramatic. She draws a lot of her inspiration from locations, fashion, and design, and even credits the movement and personalities of her models and subjects.  

“There is a bit of alchemy and magic that transcends when I capture a moment in time,” says Kellie. “I feel this way for anything that I photograph, whether a fashion shoot, a wedding or a portrait.  There is always an exchange of inspiration and energy between myself and the person in front of my camera.”

In terms of visual inspirations, the play between light and shadow is usually at the forefront, along with design elements like repeating patterns. 

“I’m obsessed with beauty, inside and out,” she adds. “My mission is to translate the detail, essence and personality of the people, places and brands I photograph, into compelling, authentic imagery.”

DOCUMENTARY STYLE CINEMATOGRAPHY WITH THE WEDDING FILMMAKERS

After all the time and energy spent bringing a wedding celebration to fruition, having a beautiful wedding film to preserve the big day is priceless. Every cinematographer will have their own aesthetic preference, but there’s something undeniably timeless, sophisticated, and captivating about documentary style wedding videos. Based in the UK, The Wedding Filmmakers are a husband and wife team that travel around the world, capturing weddings for discerning couples. We asked Adam Galwas, Co-Director of The Wedding Filmmakers, to share more about his style of cinematography, what prompted his passion for film, and what couples can expect when working with this talented duo.

GO: How did you get started in cinematography and what compelled you to work within the wedding niche?

A: My interest in video production and cinematography began at a young age filming extreme sports, which eventually led me to the commercial and fashion world, producing promotional content for brands. Along the way I was asked to film a wedding or two and fell in love with the process almost instantly. My wife Rachel assisted with those first few weddings, and with her background in design she had a great eye and natural talent from the get-go. We decided to set up a business together and “The Wedding Filmmakers” was born.

There is a real buzz and sense of camaraderie within the wedding industry. The sector is filled with inspirational and innovative people who are constantly pushing the boundaries of their individual craft. Furthermore, producing lasting keepsakes for couples who are celebrating the happiest moments of their lives is incredibly rewarding. I genuinely believe that there are very few careers as satisfying and creatively fulfilling than one within the wedding industry.

GO: How would you describe your style and what sets it aside from mainstream?

A: Each film that we create is completely bespoke to the couple with our style very much centred around capturing the genuine sentiments and atmosphere of our clients’ celebrations. By taking a relaxed and natural approach to the coverage we are able to capture people being their authentic selves. During the editing process we lean in to the moments that really reflect the couple's personality, style and story. Everything from the shot selection, music choices and editing style is considered carefully with each couple in mind.

With large weddings in particular, there is a temptation to just focus on capturing the spectacle of the event and the “wow” moments, but it is often during the quiet in-between times where people reveal their true emotions. By documenting the less obvious moments you are able to really capture the essence of the couple and their family members which in years to come will likely prove to be even more valuable than the cliché shots.

GO: From what standpoint do you capture the wedding day? Unobstructed, instructed or a little of both?

A: Our approach to filming is almost entirely documentary style. We are looking to capture authentic moments in an artistic way, leaving the couple to enjoy their wedding day with minimal intrusion or direction.

GO: What are your favorite moments to capture during the wedding day?

A: The majority of our clients love to party, so filming everybody letting their hair down after all of the formalities is usually a highlight.

GO: How far in advance should a couple reach out to you if they wish to book you for their wedding?

A: Ideally, as soon as possible, once they have secured their venue. Many of the weddings we work on have relatively short lead times, so 3-9 months before the event is when we are generally booked.

GO: What advice do you have for couples who are searching for a wedding cinematographer?

A: Look for a cinematographer that really captures the feeling of each couple’s wedding. When viewing their portfolio you should feel an emotional connection with the films, even if you do not know the couple.

Also make sure that you to take the time to watch several examples of full-length films that the cinematographer has produced. These can vary significantly in terms of style, quality and length so be clear on exactly what you will be receiving as the end product.

GO: Aside from weddings, are there any other types of filming you enjoy?

A: From a personal perspective, Rachel and I really enjoy exploring new countries and documenting our travels. With the business side of things our focus is purely on private events - from weddings to birthday parties, bar mitzvahs and life celebrations.
