GO: What is your favorite part of the event design process?

A: My favorite part of the event design process, besides the actual “designing,” is getting to know the bride and groom during our first meeting. This is when I get to know them personally, their story, where they met, where they live, etc. I get to discover what exactly they are envisioning for their wedding day; or, if they are clueless on what to do, this is the moment when we collectively discuss all the different ideas, colors, and trends. We also look at pictures and wedding magazines to get more inspired to create a look for the wedding.

GO: How would you suggest a couple narrow down their wedding décor theme or aesthetic if they can’t decide between several different ideas?

A: If the couple can’t decide between several ideas, I will suggest narrowing it down to the wedding theme or style that they would like to have such as elegant, modern, classic, rustic, or vintage. We will look through magazines, pictures, and previous weddings that I have done to show them all the endless possibilities we have to choose from, so we can design the perfect wedding for them.

GO: What are some design or décor principles you apply to every wedding you do?

A: Some of the design principles I like to incorporate are movement, proportion, contrast, alignment, and balance. Of course, I will take into consideration the venue and surroundings to create the design for the wedding. When designing a wedding, I like to create tall centerpieces if the ceilings are tall. Besides tall centerpieces, depending on the size of the wedding, I do prefer to create different looks from low to tall, creating different dimensions throughout the room.

GO: Do you have any favorite go-to suppliers for certain flowers or décor pieces?

A: I do not have a favorite go-to supplier for certain flowers or décor pieces, as we are in South Florida where we could work with so many farms/distributors and suppliers. It always depends on the event needs. Sometimes we don’t even have to go to a supplier, because of our location and our gardens here on our property – sometimes we have what we need right outside the door, meaning foliage, tropical flowers, and palm trees.

GO: How can couples and their designers use décor elements to create an immersive experience for guests?

A: The Couples and their designers can create an immersive experience by using special illuminations with movement such as a laser show or lights during the dance part of the wedding, or giving away edible party favors such as a donut wall, Champagne wall, or a sundae bar. I can even be something as simple as a bride and groom specialty cocktail option at each bar.

NORMA COHEN – THE QUEEN OF DESIGN

She’s as “New York” as it gets. With nearly three decades of event planning experience, Norma Cohen has become a household name in the world of luxury wedding planning and event design. As a fully self-taught and self-made businesswoman from Brooklyn, she has developed the uncanny ability to reimagine the same event spaces time and time again. No two weddings are ever alike, simply because no two brides are alike; and she has a knack for connecting with her clients in a way that always brings their personal style to the forefront. With her impeccable eye for design, laser focus, and deceivingly tough exterior that houses an ultra-sensitive spirit, Norma embodies everything a couple could want in an NYC wedding planner.

It All Started in Brooklyn

Norma’s passion for planning began before she was even a teenager. As a young girl, she was doing charity work and volunteering on the committee of the Sephardic Community Center in Brooklyn. While serving others, Norma also stepped into her own little world that gave her a sense of fulfillment she wasn’t getting from other areas of her life.

“I was around 12,” she shares, “and I wasn’t that girl who wanted to be with her friends all the time. I was very sensitive, and girls are not that nice at 12. It was an escape for me. I started going there after school and planning events, organizing fashion shows and plays, and started building my skills.”

By the age of 16, Norma opened her first business – Party Expressions – and was planning all types of events, from birthday parties to corporate. She had also moved up to become a member of the board at the community center. A few years later, a friend gave her the opportunity to plan her first engagement party and wedding.

In the early days of Norma’s wedding planning business, she worked almost exclusively with the bride’s parents. Since then, she has collaborated with almost every type of client imaginable, lending her expertise to countless design visions.

“There’s three types of clients,” she states. “There’s one that tells you to do whatever you want; there’s another that gives a small seed of their vision; and then there’s a particular micromanager. I always stress that they have to give me something so the wedding can be about them.”

One of Norma’s favorite success stories in terms of accurately matching her client’s vision happened about 15 years ago. A woman told her she didn’t care about any of the design details – she just wanted to show up to a party that was “dark and sexy,” and gave her carte blanche to fill in the rest. After Norma put together a design scheme and the event was underway, the client walked in wearing a gray organza gown that was an identical match to the luxury chair covers Norma chose. Of course, Norma offered to swap out the chair covers; but the client was more than happy with the final result and how the décor was the perfect reflection of her style.

Today, couples who have the privilidge of working with Norma Cohen Productions can look forward to a turnkey experience.

“I do everything,” Norma says. “You’re getting a full service.”

The first step is getting the budget and location approved, followed by invitations. While designing their invitation suite, Norma takes note of what type of calligraphy, paper, ink colors, embellishments, and any other small details her couples choose. This gives her some insight to their design preferences before moving on to create a floor plan. From there, it’s all about whittling down and refining the details.

The Design Process and Inspiration

What’s most remarkable about Norma being a top wedding designer is that she never had any formal training. In fact, she shares that “design wasn’t an original skill” of hers. She was entirely self-taught through personal experience over the years.

Although she is adamant about each wedding being a representation of her couple’s tastes and not hers, Norma’s innate sense of style and fashion undoubtedly gives her an advantage. Even when she attended the wedding of her friends Colin Cowie and Danny Peuscovich in South Africa, Colin raved about how Norma was the reigning fashion queen during their “Glamoflauge Safari Party.”

“I always love to dress up and be over-the-top,” Norma states. “I started looking at jewelry pieces and seeing them as design applications. Now with social media, you can’t do anything twice.”

Like most artists, Norma can draw inspiration and fresh ideas from anywhere. Fashion is always readily accessible, but the thrill of seeing all the components of a wedding come together can be its own type of inspiration as well.

“My favorite part of the design process is connecting the dots from the day they give me their vision, and where it goes back to them,” she says. “We had a humungous wedding at a New Jersey house, and the client wanted a large structure that was in the middle of the garden. One thing led to the next, which led to this first-of-its-kind tent that looked like it was always there. I love the opportunity to always be better. I approach every party like it’s my last party, so it has to be amazing.”

Although Norma has planned and designed weddings around the world, she honed her talents by creating multiple events in the same spaces.

“Most of my career was in the same two rooms and I had to renovate every time,” she explains. “The brides are different, so they’re feeding me different elements. Every party looks like my couple – it doesn’t look like me.”

To create a beautiful wedding in a new and exciting destination is one thing. To consistently produce fully bespoke events in the same venue is the sign of a true expert.

Words of Wisdom

Looking back at how she and her business have evolved over the decades, one of Norma’s greatest takeaways is that people need to be given a chance to show what they can do.

While she was mastering her planning and design skills in Brooklyn, Norma’s “big break” came when her friend Preston Bailey called and invited her to be a guest at a summit in Puglia. Norma didn’t know anyone initially. By the time she left, she knew everybody at the summit and came away with a priceless new network.

“I always say people need the opportunity,” she says. “I got the opportunity, and I’m very thankful. I didn’t know the industry and the industry didn’t know me. I grew in my own bubble. I’m very grateful for where I am and I don’t take anything for granted.”

Now, after solidifying her spot as a leading luxury wedding planner and designer in NYC, Norma has a wealth of advice for newer planners hoping to tap into the luxury end of the wedding industry.

“Don’t get discouraged,” she says. “Obstacles make you better. Do it because you love it, and make sure you stay on top of it because this is somebody’s wedding. Never change your price and never negotiate, because one day it’ll hit you in the back. Always stay straight and focused. I never take kickbacks from anybody, so I can always choose vendors based on how they perform. Honesty is very important. Keep your team happy – I used to be a screamer, and now I’m not. You want everyone around you to love working with you. And always stay loyal.”

Norma’s life and career are like night and day compared to where she started. From being a teenager in Brooklyn volunteering at a community center after school, to jet setting around the world in designer gowns and designing luxury events, she’s the epitome of the New York City dream. Yet even with all her career accolades and credits, some of her most meaningful achievements have been the multiple awards for community service that she has received over the years. Simply maintaining that connection to her roots speaks volumes about her character and the type of energy she brings to her clients and their celebrations.

“You never forget where you came from,” Norma says. “This is number one.”

Spring Wedding Flower Colors

Color palettes for spring weddings can vary from muted to vibrant – especially with the minimalist trend leading to many couples choosing monochromatic designs. Opting for an all-white wedding décor scheme may sound like a relatively “one note” pick; but all-white weddings are anything but basic. White florals can be elevated by a variety of other elements, like crystals, glass, reflective surfaces, acrylic chairs, and candles. Hanging crystals around the space, as demonstrated by Sky Productions in Israel, adds texture to wedding décor. It also creates a beautiful “shower” effect.

Draping a room in black can create a dramatic contrast with white wedding tables. Luxury wedding planner, Kat Minassi, set her all-white wedding tables against a black backdrop at JW Marriot Los Angeles. This made the stark white florals by Butterfly Floral Design look even more immaculate and pristine.

Playing with light and shadow adds depth and dimension. Black and white weddings in particular give designers a way to explore the monochromatic aesthetic while keeping the look current and modern. When designing an ultra-chic outdoor wedding in California, Elite Events used white roses and tempered them with back linens and wedding menus. Love It Events and Petals LA took a similar approach by placing looming black arches above a mirrored dance floor, creating a grand focal point for a black and white wedding.

To warm up an all-white wedding, designers may also bring in gold furniture and other accents. In New York City, wedding planner Amy Katz and Tantawan Bloom used gold mirrored chairs, which complemented the massive rings of candles placed on each table. This added a warm glow to the otherwise snowy white florals.

For those who dream in color and prefer to showcase the various shades of the season, traditional spring wedding flower colors are a lovely mix of pastels. Buttery yellows, blush pinks, and vibrant greenery are all effortlessly romantic.

Spring Wedding Centerpieces

Almost anything goes for spring wedding centerpieces, as the main theme of the season is new growth. Wildflowers and spriggy mixes have a charming, “undone” appeal to them. Tulips are springtime favorites and blend in seamlessly with roses and hydrangeas for extra volume. And while it’s a relatively unsung hero, baby’s breath can be a floral designer’s best friend. Aside from its ethereal, misty appearance, baby’s breath is versatile enough to be a filler flower or the main attraction. LV Event Designs used bunches of baby’s breath to punctuate a stunning tree installation, which served as a wedding centerpiece. Paired with a ring of white roses beneath the tree, it created the feeling of an enchanted garden.

Trees, which are often customized with specific blooms, have become increasingly popular for spring wedding centerpieces. This often includes building custom wedding tables, so there’s enough space for the centerpiece and lavish table settings. Tantawan Bloom specializes in customizing every detail, so clients have a one-of-a-kind wedding. Even if they’re not used for centerpieces, flowering trees are a gorgeous addition to the lounge area or dance floor décor. At Casa Loma in Toronto, Leanne Menchella and Fleurisma Events designed a fairytale wedding complete with baby pink blossoms via freestanding trees and a floral chandelier. And cherry blossoms – the spring wedding flower favorite – took center state at Bel-Air Bay Club with a wedding that showcased cherry trees interspersed throughout the reception space.

Alternatively, wedding centerpieces may include a mix of spring wedding flowers and colors. For a wedding at Hillcrest Country Club, Butterfly Floral designed some showstopping centerpieces using white orchids, white roses, and pink roses. The two-tone effect was subtle and modern, while orchids and roses maintained an air of tradition and timelessness. Below the centerpieces, there is also a low scattering of individual flowers in smaller vases for a “high-low” display of spring wedding flowers.

The use of greenery is often what takes a wedding reception to the next level. For a subtler take, designers can wind the pedestals of their wedding centerpieces in leaves and vines, or simply fill the space between flowers with sprigs of green. However, for the most transformative effect, couples may want to think in terms of large-scale designs, like using greenery to cover the ceiling in an entire canopy. In Puerto Rico, Emilio Olabarrieta used rows of greenery and floral-covered structures to place over banquet tables for an Italian villa-inspired wedding reception. To balance everything out, the tables were decorated with low floral centerpieces, with a bit of height coming from crystal candelabras.

Wedding Flowers and Their Meanings

Seasonality plays an important role when it comes to the selection of flowers available, and how accessible they are. However, couples may also consider wedding flowers and their meanings when choosing what to incorporate into their décor. Roses symbolize love and passion, so it’s fitting that they’re the most common flowers used for weddings. Peonies are also popular wedding flowers, and their meaning is similar to roses: love, happiness, romance, and beauty. May is peak peony season, so those who want an abundance of peonies in their wedding décor will definitely want to schedule a spring wedding date.

Orchids are favorite wedding flowers amongst couples worldwide, offering an entire kaleidoscope of stunning colors and shapes from which to choose. Most often, floral designers use white phalaenopsis orchids for wedding flowers, as they are the epitome of luxury. Phalaenopsis also symbolize femininity, elegance, and refinement.

Some other spring wedding flowers and their meanings include daffodils, which symbolize new beginnings and good fortune; tulips, which symbolize perfect love; lilacs, which are the symbol for renewal; and lily of the valley, which symbolizes good luck and happiness. Lily of the valley is a favorite for royal weddings, and many brides choose to walk down the aisle with a simple bouquet of these delicate green stems and white blooms.

To create a winter wonderland, wedding planner Amy Katz and floral designer Tantawan Bloom used all-white florals and towering trees for a New York City wedding at Cipriani South Street. Over at Hotel Casa del Mar in Santa Monica, Aliana Events and Revelry Event Designers worked with a more intimate space by using a mirrored ceremony aisle, making the room appear taller. When Aliana Events teams up for a collaboration with Revelry Event Designers, the results are sure to be nothing less than awe-inspiring. Event décor is an ever-evolving world of its own, with new interpretations of classics always providing ample inspiration for today’s designers. Historically, the most lavish and over-the-top décor would be reserved for grand weddings and balls; but today, even an engagement party can be turned into an ultra-luxe celebration.

For this particular “green party,” Aliana Rubins – CEO and Creative Director of Aliana Events – was working at the helm as creative director. With a background as a fashion and beauty industry makeup artist (who also helped launch Giorgio Armani Beauty), Aliana has a unique perspective and set of experiences that allow her to effectively draw inspiration from runway shows and couture fashion. Pair that with her meticulous attention to detail, and it’s easy to see how she can execute such glamorous celebrations so perfectly.

“This design was inspired by Christian Dior’s Spring 2020 runway fashion show, which was so green and lush,” Aliana describes. “Being that this was an engagement party, we wanted to stay away from using white, and therefore this style was perfect. This greenery-filled design created a fun lounge atmosphere, since it was not a sit-down dinner. The combination of the trees and giant lounges was amazing. But we also wanted to add the glam factor to our design, and that’s where the beautiful large chandeliers we placed on the tables came in.”

With such a grand vision for the engagement party, Aliana enjoyed collaborating with Revelry Event Designers, as they have a knack for bringing any idea to fruition. Founded by Edgardo Zamora, the Revelry team has an enviable list of past clients and credits that include the Academy Award Governor’s Ball, gala openings at the Staples Center, and countless celebrity weddings.

As with any luxury event, the unfolding of this engagement party was not without its challenges.

“At first, it was hard to find a location that would accommodate what we wanted to bring to life with the design,” Aliana shares. “Many of the venues we had in mind were booked, and we couldn’t simply do this at a hotel venue. In the end, we found a lot with an empty space where we brought this forest to life.”

The enchanted forest aesthetic remains a favorite theme within the wedding and events world, as there’s an infinite number of approaches designers can take. From the choice of trees and greenery, to the lighting design, there are multiple moving parts and details that all serve to create the perfect ambiance. 

“I loved the chandeliers hanging above the dance floor that created a runway fashion show vibe,” says Aliana. “Also, the chandeliers placed on the mirrored tables and their olive velvet chairs to pair. The tables were different – some with chandeliers, and others with green marble prints and massive moss bowl centerpieces.”

Lush and moody, this forested engagement party was the product of yet another successful collab between Aliana and Revelry.

Los Angeles weddings that feature an abundance of exquisite floral designs often have a common denominator – many were designed by Eddie Zaratsian of Eddie Zaratsian Lifestyle & Design. Throughout his career, Eddie has provided the industry with copious amounts of wedding floral inspiration while continuing to design bespoke, fully customized décor schemes for his clients in Southern California and beyond. We asked the world-renowned designer about some of his go-to floral favorites and what wedding floral trends are currently in demand.

GO: How would you sum up your personal design style?

A: Elegant, abundant, timeless, and classic

GO: What prompted you to start a career in the wedding and event industry?

A: I always had a passion for taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary and felt what better muse to express that passion than that of celebrations. I love making people happy and I love design, so I felt the wedding and event industry went hand in hand with both of these.

GO: What are your favorite types of flowers or décor elements to use?

A: I actually don't have a favorite; the type of flower I like to use depends on the overall look I'm trying to achieve. With respect to decor elements, again, same response applies here. But I do love to add texture to my design elements, and I think proper lighting is everything when it comes to creating the perfect moment and capturing the perfect images.

GO: What flowers or details mesh well with any type of wedding style?

A: If executed properly, every flower can mesh well with a wedding; but the safe answer here is roses. Roses always work well and play well with a wide variety of flowers and serve as an instant elevation to floral design.

GO: Where do you get your inspiration when creating one-of-a-kind floral arrangements or wedding décor schemes?

A: My inspiration comes from my travels, interior design, architecture, artwork – you name it, I can be inspired by it. But my ultimate inspiration is always wanting to set a trend, not follow a trend.

GO: Are there any current trends you’re implementing into your weddings?

A: Color!! The use of color at weddings is making a major comeback. While I’ve been pushing my couples to be more open to color for years, the trend is definitely making it easier to get them over the white, white and green, and blush color scheme mindset.

GO: Describe one of the best events you’ve designed.

A: I love every single event BUT one of my favorites I've designed was for a couple that was completely open to whatever I wanted to do. They had no idea what they were getting until they walked into the room. It was an all-white wedding, and for their sweetheart table I created a backdrop made from fringe. I cut the fringe in different lengths and created the perfect means of framing the couple. They were in complete shock and loved with how it all turned out. Their absolute trust in me made it one of my favorite weddings to date.
